These papers consist of letters and narratives related to Reed B. Bontecou's journey in 1846 up the Amazon River in Para, Brazil. The letters were primarily those received from his father, Peter Bontecou, regarding news about the family as well as his concerns for the safety of his son. Of particular interest is the letter of 17 April 1846 regarding the possibility of practicing medicine with Dr. Brinsmade in Troy; letter of 18 May 1846 which contains comments on the war between United States and Mexico; letter of 10 July 1846 from father, and brother, James, both of whom urge Reed not to go into the interior of Brazil. An additional letter, 25 July 1846, was written by John Hauxwell at Juncal, Brazil regarding sightings of various spices of birds. The narratives, written by Reed Bontecou, detail his observations and experiences of the voyage on the river, particularly his interest in the natural features, plants, and animals.
